FIBA extends commitment to sustainable 3x3 events, maintains ISO 20121 certification

MIES (Switzerland) -FIBA is proud to announce that it has maintained its International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 20121 certification for its commitment to hosting sustainable 3x3 events for a second year running.

FIBA became the first basketball organization to obtain ISO 20121 recognition in 2022, a globally recognized standard developed by the ISO.

The certification was awarded by BSI (British Standards Institution), the business improvement and standards company. BSI's comprehensive external audit determined that the FIBA 3x3 World Tour and FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup events successfully implemented initiatives aimed at reducing costs, limiting carbon emissions and waste, managing the biodiversity of venues, respecting human rights and achieving a diverse and inclusive workforce.

"The renewal of this globally recognized sustainability certification is a testament to our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint at all major FIBA 3x3 events. From our MVP trophy, produced entirely from 100% recycled materials, and reusable water bottles for players and staff, to locally sourced food and recycling of equipment, our organization is driving positive change within the sport, our supply chain and the communities that host our events," said Alex Sanchez, 3x3 Managing Director.

Murray Sayce, Global Head of Assurance Sustainability Solutions at BSI said: “There is a fantastic opportunity to harness the power of sport and its many supporters to collaborate to address global sustainability challenges to benefit people and planet. Huge congratulations to FIBA for achieving this certification which demonstrates the organization’s commitment to promoting sustainability across basketball and across the communities it impacts.

The certification of all major FIBA 3x3 events against this internationally recognised standard has the potential to have a significant positive impact on the environment, employees, suppliers and the wider stakeholder community. It’s great to see FIBA taking action to accelerate progress towards a fair society and a sustainable world.”

During the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2024, held in Singapore from 27-31 March, players, officials and volunteers once again were provided with ezlink cards to take public transport to and from the hotel, training and competition venues. Moreover, catering for players, officials and staff included biodegradable and reusable options, which replaced single-use plastic cutlery. FIBA will continue to implement sustainable solutions throughout this year’s 3x3 World Tour, minimising its impact on the environment as much as possible.
